Peace of God

About Us

what we believe our history where we meet

What We Believe:

Principles that Drive our Mission:
  • We believe our calling, as God's people, is to glorify Him in all we do, both in this life and throughout eternity.
  • We glorify God by loving Him with all of our heart, soul, strength and mind and our neighbor as ourselves.
  • We regard the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the inspired Word of God, and the only infallible rule of faith and life.
  • We believe the mercy, love and grace of God expressed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the ministry of the Holy Spirit is the only power by which God's people live and accomplish any good work.
  • We believe that the Great Commission (making disciples of Christ among the nations of the earth) and the Cultural Mandate (claiming and redeeming all of life for the glory of God) are the structure in which the people of God are to carry out our mission.
Values That Fuel Our Mission:
  • Worship: We believe that all of God's people are to glorify God by worshipping him corporately and privately in spirit and in truth.
  • Truth: We believe that individuals and society are transformed by the proclamation and application of God's Word to all of life.
  • Disciple-Making: We believe every believer is called to spiritual maturity and the church is called to equip and challenge Christians to serve God in every area of life through the diverse gifts which have been given to every believer.
  • Relationships: We believe that God created the church to be a loving community of believers where authentic Christian relationships are essential to the spiritual growth of each member.
  • Unity: We believe that God calls all believers who embrace the truth of the biblical gospel to worship, fellowship, and labor together in unity while respecting the liberty of conscience of every believer.
  • Evangelism: We believe that all people outside of Christ are lost and God is seeking for the lost who will worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
  • Reformed: We are convinced that Reformed theology and Presbyterian Church government are the most faithful expression of the Biblical model.
  • Confessional: We believe that the Westminster Confession of Faith effectively reflects the teaching of Holy Scripture.

Our History:

The Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church was organized by and comprised of a majority of Scottish and Scotch-Irish settlers on September 26, 1735. It is believed that these settlers were, at one time, members of the Octorara Church. A little known fact is that the church's more popular name was, and in some cases still is, the Brandywine Manor Church. The first pastor to "The Forks" during this pioneer period was the Reverend Samuel Black. In 1761, the Reverend John Carmichael, a native of Scotland, was installed as pastor. Known as the "Revolutionary Pastor," Rev. Carmichael whole-heartedly supported the "revolution." He preached before Congress, was present at the Battle of Long Island, and urged enlistment into the army. Rev. Carmichael was a counselor of General George Washington. At one point he was forced, with his family, to flee from the church due to an impending British raid. John Carmichael lived to see the independence of his country acknowledged by the British government.

There are many other wonderful and important historical events that surrounded The Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church. One was the building of the present sanctuary; the cornerstone was laid on August 7, 1875 and a service of dedication was held in December of 1876. This was the third sanctuary of record. Another singular event was the guest preaching of the notable evangelist, Dwight L. Moody in 1892.

The Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church has always had a wonderful and rich history of conservative ideals and theology while always looking forward to the future. Under the leadership of the Reverends H. H. Kurtz, John A. Kauffoth, and Robert G. Stier, James Andrew Curtis, and the present pastor, Rev. John William (Will) Snyder "The Forks" has and continues to be true to the Word of God and the tenets of the reformed faith while seeking to live in the cutting edge of modern-day Christianity.
